How Your Choices Help Shift You Toward Conscious Living

Life is a Series of Choices

Chapter 6 of my book SOAR is called “Choice” and I remind my audience that in every moment, we have a choice.  Here is how I kick off Chapter 6:

“We often drift through life without realizing that everything we do is a choice. How we spend our time is a choice. Who we spend our time with is a choice. The food we put in our bodies is a choice. Whether or not we workout is a choice. Making time for self-care is a choice.”

We may not always get to choose what happens to us in life, but we always get to choose how we respond. Do we react out of emotion, or do we respond with peace and love?

My First Experience with Conscious Choices

I remember a time years ago when I was spread really thin and I scheduled a meeting at 10 p.m. One of my friends asked me, “Why would you do that?” I said, “Because I had to.” She said, “No, you didn’t have to. You chose to.”

I remember exactly what I was thinking at the time. I thought, “I didn’t choose to, I had to.”

After my initially-defensive, self-protecting reaction wore off, I remember thinking “Did I really have a choice? Could I have done this a different way? Could I have scheduled it at a different time, a time that allowed me to maintain better harmony in my life? And allowed me to honor myself better?”

The reality is that I didn’t know how to do any of that then. It was during a time when I was letting life run me. I didn’t know how to make conscious choices.

That was right around the time my spiritual growth and transformation kicked into high gear.

The good news is that after years and years of soul work, I now know how to make conscious choices, and I’m going to share some ideas with you in this newsletter.

Powerful Questions About Making Conscious Choices

Here’s what to ask yourself as you shift into making conscious choices in your life.

  • What feels right to me?
  • Am I being influenced by any external factors?
  • Am I seeking validation from others?
  • Is the choice congruent with the direction in which I want to take my future?
  • How can I look at this choice from different angles?
  • Am I holding onto regret or doubt about prior choices I have made for myself?
  • Am I judging myself for prior choices?
  • Do I have any fears?

Making Peace with Prior Choices

We are constantly growing and changing over time, as we have more and more life experiences that affect who we are. Every experience we have affords us the opportunity to learn about ourselves, and we may find that we have outgrown situations that are a result of prior decisions.

We may find ourselves looking back and wishing we had made different choices in our lives.  While that may be the case, we must remember that we were making the decision from a very different point of evolution. We were doing our very best.

This is where we run the risk of regret.

In the spiritual world, there is no room for regret. Regret is an ego-based concept. The real growth happens when we reframe our choices from a spiritual perspective.

In Chapter 27 (called Ascension) of SOAR, I reassure my readers that every season serves a purpose, and there is no such thing as a mistake, even prior choices.

“As you progress through your spiritual journey, resist the urge to look back and critique where you were at any prior point. Resist the urge to wish you had done things differently. There’s no back arrow in life like there is on a computer. There are no “do-overs.” Feelings of regret never lead to anything productive. In fact, it is one of the mechanisms that will only serve to keep you stuck and unable to move forward and enjoy your journey in great depth as you partner with the Universe.

There are also no mistakes and no failures. Relegate those concepts from your mind and reframe them as “learning experiences.” All of your experiences have brought you to this moment in a divinely orchestrated manner, and you are right where you are meant to be.”
