When I crunched my year over year numbers for my business, I was shocked to learn that I 10 x’ed my revenue, all during a world pandemic.
Given my math and stats background, one might think that my number one focus would be on numbers when it comes to running my business, but it’s not.
Truth be told, my primary focus isn’t on my numbers at all; it’s on building long-term relationships by leading with value.
I didn’t get there overnight, and my journey had a healthy enough dose of adversity that would have made some people close up shop.
So how exactly did my business experience explosive growth during a time when the world was shutting down, in fear mode, and riddled with uncertainty and doubt?
I’m going to tell you, straight from the heart. The real, raw, true, behind-the-scenes story.
So settle in…There’s a lot here that I want to share with you that you can apply to your own life.
Rewind to March 2020. We all remember the events of that month well. The pandemic made its way to the U.S., schools closed,my daily living all of a sudden became stressful, with 4 kids now home from school, all while trying to run my business.
Right around this time was the point in my business when I had planned to shift out of content creation mode (I had spent the early years of my business on my book developing courses, content etc.) and lean heavily into “getting out there” – networking, coaching, and speaking. All of that came to a screeching halt.
Fortunately, I already had a super solid support system in place to help me navigate the complexities. My spiritual life coach kept reminding me that life is always rigged in my favor and that I could reframe any situation to be highly transformative, and my business coach kept reassuring me that if I applied consistency and patience and kept showing up with a commitment to service, I’d come out winning, regardless of what was going on around me.
Despite these reinforcements, I’m not so proud to say that fear mode reared its ugly head from time to time – I’m not exempt from that. Even doing what I’m doing, I still experience the same fears and doubts and insecurities that you do. But the key is to learn how to transmute them into energy that is productive and transformative, and I believe everyone can achieve that.
The first thing I did was evaluate every aspect of my life and identify what served me and what didn’t. I identified areas where I could build in efficiencies, hired an assistant, developed routines and processes, outsourced things around the house. That was the easy part.
While the day-to-day tactical changes that minimized the pressure and noise in my life definitely had some impact, I attribute the lion’s share of the explosiveness to the deep, inner work I did on myself.
It was time to get really honest with myself, and take a deep dive into my beliefs. I knew it wasn’t going to be easy, but I also knew it was precisely what was needed to help me break through to the next level.
The harsh reality is that I was carrying some beliefs that didn’t serve me. I was doing all the right things, but I only kinda, sorta embodied the beliefs that translated into results.
Kinda, sorta doesn’t cut it. You have to really believe it deep down.
It was during this time that my core beliefs were cemented in for me. Here are the truths I arrived at and now embody, in no particular order:
1. Adversity is here to serve us.
Inside every situation steeped in adversity is an opportunity. An opportunity to rise above the challenge, become more self-aware, learn how to be resilient, and emerge more connected to who you are than ever before.
2. Rejection is really redirection.
There’s no such thing as rejection, it’s all just redirection. I’ve experienced so many “no’s” along the way, that someone reviewing my stats might wonder why I haven’t quit by now. Every “no” is a stepping stone to the “yes.” Keep going.
3. Value comes from within.
If you’re relying on the outside world to validate your worth, you’re going to be waiting a lifetime.
You have to go first. If you want the world to treat you as high-value, you need to show up as high-value. The world responds to the way we feel about ourselves. Keep investing in yourself – mind, body, and spirit.
You need to broadcast a signal that says “what I have to offer makes the world a better place.” If you can’t get there from where you are, perhaps it’s time to ask yourself if what you’re doing is aligned with who you really are.
4. Abundance is unlimited.
It doesn’t matter what’s going on around you, there’s more than enough of everything for everyone. It doesn’t matter if it’s a world-scale pandemic or not.
If you keep showing up with an open heart, open-mind, and a commitment to service, and keep doing it without making excuses, you will come out winning. You just have to want it bad enough, and be willing to do the work to get there.
Fear is what keeps you stuck in thoughts of lack and limitation and not enough. Crowd out the fear. If you don’t intentionally choose abundance, the default is fear. Choose abundance.
5. The path to anything that you want in life is through the soul.
Keep making one heart-centered, soul-based choice, moment after moment. Authenticity, service, truth, connection, kindness, compassion, and empowerment. Keep reaching for higher virtues. Let your soul lead the way.
6. Relationships first.
You’ve heard me say this a million times and I’m going to keep saying it: the relationship between YOU and YOU is the most important relationship you have. Everything in your life is an offshoot of that, and is directly affected by how you feel about yourself.
After the relationship with yourself is solid–you love yourself and are proud of the way you show up each day–comes relationships with others. Ask yourself every day, “How did I invest in the relationship with myself, and did I nurture the relationships that are most important to me?”
7. Leaders must be nimble.
Change is inevitable, growth is optional. The leaders who carry their organizations through these ever-changing times are the ones who embrace change, and lean into it with an adventurous spirit.
So there ya have it. How I 10x’ed my business.
Whether you’re feeling stuck or running at status-quo, the answer to moving forward with massive momentum is found in your beliefs. Ready to dive in? I sure am. This is what I do. Give me 30 minutes and I’ll tell you what belief is holding you back.
