In my dream the other night, I was bargaining big time.
Bargaining with some higher power — God, the Universe, call it what you will.
We were talking about the only two givens in life: death and taxes, and I was looking for some kind of loophole.
“Can’t I PLEEEASE get out one of the two?” I pleaded.
I mean, it never hurts to ask, right?
I was told a firm “No, that’s the way it is.”
My dream made me philosophize three concepts:
1. How we respond when we find ourselves in situations we wouldn’t choose.
Have you ever found yourself in a situation you just didn’t want to be in, but didn’t have a choice?
Life has a way of putting us smack dab in the middle of situations we couldn’t predict or choose for ourselves.
We make it so much harder on ourselves when we continue to resist the inevitable.
It sounds counterintuitive, but in resisting it we hold on to it, and in accepting it we let it go.
What is one situation in your life where you could shift from resisting to accepting?
2. Ways in which harsh truths can actually empower us.
Take death for example. We can either let it stifle us, by staying stuck in fear, avoiding the topic, or, we can allow the idea to encourage us to really live, not just exist; thrive, not just survive.
You can choose to really make the most of each moment. Laugh a little louder. Love a little harder. Say goodbye a little longer (Had to throw that in there. Name that ‘80s gum commercial!)
Now think about taxes. We can either sit and complain that a significant portion of income goes to taxes, and continue to focus on the portion of our income that we don’t have access to.
Or, we can choose to embody the mindset of abundance, where there is more than enough of everything for everyone, where your net income is driven by your mindset and how willing you are to blast through limitations you’re putting on yourself.
How could you empower yourself just a little bit more this week?
3. How we respond in the face of uncertainty
Have you ever been in a situation where you wish you could just race to the outcome? I know I sure have.
Not knowing is uncomfortable. “Knowing” is a lot easier than not knowing. But I have “knowing” in quotes for a reason. Do we ever really have certainty, about anything?
Even when things seem certain, it’s really an illusion anyways. No matter who we are, no matter what our situation is, we all live with uncertainty every day.
Maybe instead of fixating on knowing an outcome, we should anchor on deeper knowingness, our beliefs. Truths that serve us regardless of the situation.
I’m right where I’m supposed to be.
Life is always rigged in my favor.
The universe is always taking care of me.
Trust the process.
Truths like that.
When we stretch to connect to deeper truths, we remind ourselves of our divine nature and that we have resources beyond what we can tap into in the physical world.
Maybe life isn’t supposed to be about sprinting from destination to destination anyways, and is supposed to be about soaking up the joy in the journey.
What is a deeper belief that you could lean on during times of uncertainty?
This week, I encourage you to take some time to reflect on the ideas in this article.
